A Bit About Me

I began my professional training over 13 years ago but my journey to prepare for my career as a psychologist has been lifelong. I am no stranger to personal, relational, and mental health challenges; from my perspective, this is a part of being human. My personal and professional values of living curiously, appreciating the diversity of experience, and prioritizing connection are rooted in my personal history, life lessons, and bearing witness to others' stories. These values are intertwined throughout my mission for practice at Stone & Oak Psychological Services.

When I'm not at Stone & Oak, you might find me wearing a different "professional hat" such as teaching graduate students, conducting research on critical care recovery, or presenting at various conferences or public forums. I also enjoy spending time with my family, golfing, creating new artwork, travelling, or getting away to the mountains.

My Approach

Family Systems

The ways in which we understand and interact with others is informed by the multiple systems that surround us. Influential systems might include your family members, communities, culture, educational or work experiences, geographical location, and more. Together, we might look at your family history across generations to gain a greater understanding on how you engage with others, the values you hold, and past experiences that have influenced your life today.

Emotion-Focused
Therapy

Our brains have an emotion-processing centre that helps translate our internal and external experiences into meaning. Fear vs. excitement, sadness, vs. anger, joy vs. disillusionment. We all experience these emotions and express them differently. The way we perceive and respond to these emotions are influenced by our past experiences, including the attachment bonds we form to important adults during infancy/childhood. Together, I might support you in holding space for processing your emotions differently.

Narrative Therapy

We create meaning from individual events that eventually link together to form the central plot of our lives. The stories we tell may be about ourselves and our relationships with others, our abilities or inabilities, our successes or failures, or our desires and displeasures. Social influences, societal discourses, and cultural norms often play a role in how we understand ourselves and, in return, how others understand us. Together, we might find ways to expand or shift your story to include strengths, capabilities, and possibilities.

Trauma-Informed
Lens

The experience of trauma is not always restricted to a singular traumatic event.

We might hold trauma from a series of events, relational exchanges, or seemingly "small" incidents, where we may not recognize the lasting impact until long after these experiences have passed. These experiences often stay with us and inform how we engage with our world. I utilize a trauma-informed lens in all of my work to support how I understand you, your concerns, support your safety, and my approach to therapeutic intervention.

Honouring you, your history, and your journey.
